POKOTABI / Amitatsu
海鮮屋台あみたつ
At Amitatsu in Kyoto's Sanjo-kai Shopping Street, seafood takes center stage, from its signature rice cracker-crusted deep-fried skewers and seasonal sashimi assortments to grilled shellfish, daytime drinks, and hearty set meals.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Strolling through the Sanjo-kai arcade, Amitatsu catches the eye with an easygoing atmosphere that feels equal parts bustling fish market and casual street stall. Simple seating made of upturned beer crates topped with cushions lines the space. Open from 11:30 to 22:30 on operating days, it invites diners in whether they are looking for a satisfying teishoku set meal or an early drink. With prepared dishes and fresh seafood often displayed out front, the shop blends seamlessly into the daily life of passersby.
Opening the menu reveals an impressive array of seafood options. An assortment of thickly sliced seasonal sashimi or seared early-season bonito with salt makes for a bright, satisfying opening to the meal. Nibbling on small plates such as drunken sweet shrimp or namero alongside a chilled sake or highball offers the relaxed comfort unique to an unpretentious izakaya.
A defining highlight of the menu is the original kushikatsu. Coated in finely crushed okaki rice crackers before frying, these skewers offer a robust crunch and toasty toasted-rice aroma, setting them apart from ordinary breadcrumbed versions with a lighter, crisp texture. Skewers ranging from sardine paired with tart pickled plum to shrimp, sillago, marinated tuna, and scallops are popular dipped in a flavorful thickened broth.
Alongside the fried dishes, grilled shellfish brings the fragrant scent of the sea directly to the table. Options like turban shell grilled in its shell, scallop, and plump grilled hamaguri clams pair naturally with seasonal local sake or warmed sake. For daytime dining, set meals such as the sashimi set, crisp fried horse mackerel set, and seafood rice bowl set provide plenty of options for a full, satisfying meal without needing to drink.
